School Visits

There is plenty to discover inside Exeter’s oldest building.

Explore over 900 years of history at St Nicholas Priory, from Benedictine monastery, to Tudor town house to Victorian tenements. St Nicholas Priory welcomes pupils from primary and secondary schools, as well as college and university students. We offer a range of workshops tailored to suit each school’s needs, and can offer half or full day workshops.

Example workshops could cover:

St Nicholas Priory is an ideal place to explore the changes in religious history over the past 900 years. The building has a rich religious history, having been home to Benedictine monks from 1087-1536; transformed by the Reformation in the 16th century, and housed a Catholic school in the 19th century.

As a Benedictine Priory during the medieval era, we can offer a workshop to explore both the religious life at the Priory, as well as a general overview of Medieval Society. This could include the Priory as a charitable institution, rich and poor differences of medieval society, and medieval diets.

Following the Reformation, the Priory became home to wealthy merchants, and is displayed as the 1602 home of the Hurst family. All aspects of Tudor life can be covered, including rich and poor differences, diets, games, schooling, etc.

As Exeter’s oldest surviving building (with a roof!), St Nicholas Priory has witnessed almost a thousand years of Exeter’s History. We can tailor our workshops to fit the area of local history being explored.

St Nicholas Priory houses the medicinal collection, cared for by Devon and Exeter Medical Heritage Trust.
