All Hallows’ Performance of “In The Stones” – a new play for St Nicholas Priory by Troubadour Stageworks

In the Stones

As part of our All Hallows’ day of music, crafts, tales and fun, Troubadour present this new play that weaves folklore, history, myth and music into a tale adapted for St Nicholas Priory. Come to our workshop before the show (11-1pm, free) and then take part in it!

It is dusk, and Childe Rowland and his sister Burd Ellen are whiling away time outside the priory. When Rowland throws a ball high over the building, he and his sister race for it – each taking one side of the building. Childe Rowland runs left – clockwise – but Burd Ellen goes ‘widdershins’ – anti-clockwise, and vanishes.
Childe Rowland retrieves the ball, but finds himself alone. Burd Ellen has fallen into The Other Side of Things – a parallel world that lives in the stones of the priory, where all the stories and scenes of past long gone meld and replay continuously. Out of sync, out of time.

This half-term, Troubadour Stageworks presents a new play that explores the world of local folklore around us.

Using music, local customs and strange stories the narrative slips seamlessly through time and brings to the priory, vibrant with local lore, a new flash of inventive drama. Suitable for all ages.

St Nicholas Priory

Founded by William the Conqueror in 1087, St Nicholas Priory was home to Benedictine monks for over 400 years and is the oldest building in Exeter. In 1536, like other monasteries, it was closed and the remains became the home of wealthy Tudor merchants.

St Nicholas Priory is in Mint Lane with walking access from Fore Street or Bartholomew Street West.
The nearest car park is Mary Arches Street (5 mins). Parking at Smythen Street and Harlequin Shopping Centre is also available.  Exeter Central railway station (10 mins). The bus station is a 15-minute walk away with many buses stopping on the High Street (1o mins).

Unfortunately, only the ground floor of our building is wheelchair-accessible.

Accessible loos and nappy-changing facilities.
