Outdoor tour of St Nicholas Priory – Cancelled

Due to recent changes in government guidance we have decided to cancel our Heritage Open Day events on the 12th, 13th, 19th and 20th of September. Please keep an eye on our social media for updates about future tours and events.

Founded by William the Conqueror in 1087, St Nicholas Priory was home to Benedictine monks for over 400 years and is the oldest building in Exeter. In 1536, like other monasteries, it was closed and the remains became the home of wealthy Tudor merchants.

These tours provide an opportunity to explore the outside of St Nicholas Priory and the local precinct. You will also learn about the history of the building and the surrounding archaeology.

Where will the tours start from?
Your tour guide will meet you in the garden of St Nicholas Priory.

What safety measures will be in place for the tours?
For the safety of the public and our staff we ask everyone to follow government advice and adhere to the two-metre social distancing rule. Our tours are limited to an appropriate number of people and sanitiser and disposable masks will also be available on request.

Directions
St Nicholas Priory is on Mint Lane with walking access from Fore Street or Bartholomew Street West.

The nearest car park is Mary Arches, which is a five-minute walk from the priory. Exeter Central railway station is a ten-minute walk away. The bus station is a 15-minute walk with many buses stopping on the High Street which is ten minutes away.

Access
Visitors are required to walk/stand for the duration of the outdoor tour but there is seating available to rest in the garden. The outdoor tour is fully accessible for wheelchair users.

Facilities
Our main block of toilets is currently closed due to building work. The toilet at 21 the Mint can be made available on request.

If you have any questions about the tour please email our buildings manager Abi on buildings@nicholaspriory.com.
